Departmental V/TOs let each team in your organization run its own 1-Year Plan, Rocks, and Issues — while staying aligned to the company's shared Vision.
What is a departmental V/TO?
A departmental V/TO is a V/TO scoped to a specific department rather than the whole company. Departments set their own:
1-Year Plan
Rocks
Issues
The top half of every departmental V/TO — the company's Vision — is inherited from the company Official V/TO and appears as read-only. This keeps every department anchored to the same Core Values, Core Focus, and long-range targets. Departments can add their own notes to inherited Vision rows without changing the company content.
Note: Scope is permanent. When you create a V/TO draft you choose Company or Departmental, and that choice cannot be changed afterward.
How to create a departmental V/TO
Click V/TO from the left navigation bar.
Click Open V/TO Builder.
Click + New Draft.
Enter a name for the draft (up to 80 characters).
Under Scope, select Departmental.
Enter a department name (up to 60 characters).
Choose how you want to start: Clone the Official copies an existing Official V/TO as a starting point; Start blank creates a new V/TO from scratch.
Click Create Draft.
The new departmental V/TO is created as a Draft and opens in the full-screen builder.
How the company Vision cascades
When your organization's company Official V/TO is published, its Vision section automatically appears in every departmental V/TO as read-only content. This includes:
Core Values
Core Focus
10-Year Target
Marketing Strategy
3-Year Picture
Departments fill in their own 1-Year Plan, Rocks, and Issues independently. They can also add notes to any inherited Vision row — those notes are visible only within that department's V/TO and do not affect the company content.
One Official per department slot
Each department can have only one Official V/TO at a time. If you try to publish a new Official for a department that already has one, EOS One will block the action with an error.
To publish a new Official for a department:
Open the current departmental Official.
Select Return to draft from the viewer header.
Open the new draft and publish it as the Official.
Who can read and edit departmental V/TOs
Any member of your organization can read a departmental V/TO once it is published as an Official.
Edit access follows the same rules as company V/TOs:
Owners and Admins can create and edit all V/TO drafts.
Leadership team members derive edit access from your Accountability Chart.
Members can work with a draft only after an Owner or Admin shares it with them.
Working copies are private. When you open a draft to edit, your in-progress changes are only visible to you. They do not appear in other users' Drafts table or the manage page until published.
Q&A
How many departmental V/TOs can we have?
There is no limit. Your organization can create departmental V/TOs for as many departments as needed.
Can I change a V/TO's scope from Company to Departmental (or vice versa)?
No. Scope is set at creation and cannot be changed. If you need a different scope, create a new draft with the correct scope.
What if we don't have a company Official V/TO yet?
The Vision section in a departmental V/TO will be empty until your organization publishes a company Official V/TO. You can still create and work on the departmental sections (1-Year Plan, Rocks, and Issues) in the meantime.
